A Tendai temple founded in 781, known for the black Niō guardian statues that gave it its popular name. In the Edo period it drew pilgrims alongside Naritasan; today it is quiet in a way Naritasan never is. Getting there is the catch — a train to Shibayama-Chiyoda and then a local community bus — so it suits someone who wants the opposite of a crowd and has time to spend on the journey.
