Sogo Reido (Toshoji Temple)

宗吾霊堂（鳴鐘山東勝寺）

≈ 40 min from Narita Airport, one way.

A Shingon temple from the late 700s, better known as the resting place of Sakura Sogo, the village headman executed in the Edo period for petitioning the shogun over crushing taxes on local farmers. The grounds hold a treasure hall and a museum telling his story in life-size figures. Quieter than Naritasan, and the hydrangea garden — 7,000 plants — is worth timing a June visit around.
